Students are researching information about university admissions and selection processes for 2027.

According to current admission regulations, in addition to priority points based on region and category, students may receive bonus points as stipulated by each university. These include a maximum of 3 bonus points for students winning national-level academic awards; and a maximum of 1.5 bonus points for special achievements or talents, as well as for foreign language certificates or international certificates. The total of all bonus points cannot exceed 10% of the maximum admission score, equivalent to a maximum of 3 points on a 30-point scale.

Students from Son La Specialized High School conduct scientific research.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, in the 2026 high school graduation exam, only 5 candidates nationwide achieved a perfect score of 30/30 in the three-subject combination. However, many universities still recorded hundreds of candidates with admission scores exceeding or exceeding the base score thanks to additional points awarded according to the universities' own policies. In reality, when the cutoff scores in many training programs are high, a difference of just one bonus point can significantly affect the admission results. Therefore, the proposal to adjust the bonus point policy is receiving attention, in the context of universities moving towards evaluating candidates based on academic performance, abilities, and personal development.

The province currently has 56 general and continuing education schools with approximately 48,000 students. Over the years, high schools in the province have consistently focused on nurturing gifted students, encouraging them to improve their foreign language skills and participate in academic competitions and events. In the 2025-2026 National High School Student Excellence Competition, 40 students from the province won awards (an increase of 6 awards compared to the previous year). More than 3,000 students from junior and senior high schools won awards in provincial-level student excellence competitions, science and technology competitions, robotics competitions, etc. In addition, many high school students have proactively invested in studying for and taking international certifications such as SAT and IELTS, or participating in aptitude tests to gain an advantage in competing for admission to top universities.

This school year, Son La Specialized High School has 9 national teams of outstanding students with 90 students. In addition, the school has more than 40 students who have achieved IELTS scores of 7.0 or higher. Regarding the proposed adjustments to priority points in university admissions, most teachers and students at the school have expressed agreement and support. However, some opinions suggest that the adjustments should be implemented gradually to avoid disruption and negative impacts on students' psychology and studies, especially for those who have spent 1-2 years preparing and accumulating certificates for various admission options.

Actively updating themselves on new developments in university admissions, high school teachers in the province are strengthening counseling and guidance to help students maintain positive attitudes and set the right academic goals. Schools continue to encourage students to accumulate knowledge, improve their foreign language skills, participate in gifted student competitions, and develop necessary skills to proactively adapt to changes in university admissions.

The Ministry of Education and Training is expected to announce a circular amending and supplementing some regulations on university admissions in November. While policies may still be subject to further adjustments, studying, accumulating knowledge, improving foreign language skills, developing critical thinking, and fostering self-learning abilities remain crucial foundations for students preparing for the future. Timely support and guidance from schools and families will help students maintain a positive mindset, proactively adapt, and confidently face the challenges of university life.
