Mr. Jay Clayton

Multiple sources familiar with the matter indicate that Clayton may be appointed as the top advisor to the US President on AI.

Clayton is expected to retain his position as Director of National Intelligence while simultaneously taking on his new role overseeing AI.

However, the decision has not been confirmed by the White House. A White House official said that all personnel announcements will be made directly by the President and that any information appearing before that time is unfounded speculation.

Trump had previously announced he would appoint an official to oversee AI and create an “AI force.”

Following a meeting with technology company leaders at the White House on September 29, the US President said personnel decisions could be made within 3-4 days.

If appointed, Clayton would become the second person to take on the role of AI leader during Trump's second term.

Venture capitalist David Sacks oversaw both AI and cryptocurrency during the early stages of the administration, before leaving the White House in March 2026.

Mr. Sacks continues to advise the President and co-chairs the President's Council of Science and Technology Advisors.

Clayton was confirmed by the Senate as Director of National Intelligence in July 2026 with a vote of 51 in favor and 47 against. In this role, he will oversee 18 agencies within the U.S. intelligence community.

Prior to heading intelligence, Clayton served as Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for much of Trump's first term, from 2017 to the end of 2020. He also served as a top federal prosecutor in Manhattan.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, Clayton described AI as a "game changer," presenting both opportunities and threats.

He argued that the government needs to understand and control a technology that possesses both of these characteristics simultaneously.
