At least 10 people were injured, two critically, after a car plowed into a crowd of rugby fans in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, on October 3.
According to local officials, the incident occurred in the Wallsend suburb, about 110 km north of Sydney.
At that time, a large crowd of fans had gathered on both sides of the road to cheer on the Newcastle Knights rugby team before they departed for the National Rugby League (NRL) Finals against the Sydney Roosters.
New South Wales police said that among the injured were several children. Two are in critical condition: a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man.
The driver who caused the accident was an 18-year-old man. He was arrested by authorities at the scene and taken to the hospital for mandatory tests.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver was also a fan of the team. Local police are actively investigating the cause of the incident. Initial findings indicate no terrorist involvement.
Speaking on social media platform X, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his sorrow over the serious incident, emphasizing that it was a deeply regrettable event at a time when local people were sharing pride and celebrating the sporting occasion.
