Compared to June, the peak production month of 2026, Ukraine 's steel production decreased by 690,800 tonnes; pig iron by 670,600 tonnes; and rolled metals by 599,800 tonnes by the end of September.
Based on European market prices, these losses are estimated at approximately $580.2 million per month for steel; $274.9 million for cast iron; and $449.9 million for rolled products.
Metallurgical products, mainly exported to Europe, were Ukraine's second-largest source of foreign exchange earnings in the first half of 2026.
Steel, pig iron, and rolled metal production has now completely halted following a series of explosions at Ukraine's largest metallurgical plants.
On September 25, ArcelorMittal, a leading multinational steel and mining corporation, announced that it could no longer operate its largest steel plant in Ukraine, ArcelorMittal Kryvoy Rog, following explosions on the nights of September 12 and 21.
This was the country's last major steel plant that had never ceased operations before.
On September 22, Interpipe Steel announced a temporary suspension of operations, following reports of shutdowns at Zaporozhstal and Kametstal on September 18.
Another major enterprise, the Dnepr Metallurgical Plant, had already ceased operations due to financial difficulties (the plant temporarily shut down in January 2022 and bankruptcy proceedings began in 2026), and explosions also occurred at this plant in early September 2026.
