On September 30, a Flydubai flight from Dubai (UAE) to Tel Aviv (Israel) had to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, due to a security incident.
On October 1st, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Interior confirmed that the flight diversion was due to the co-pilot attacking the captain, leaving both injured to varying degrees.
The ministry added that, after being discharged from the hospital, both pilots flew to Abu Dhabi with UAE security personnel, while the remaining six crew members returned safely to Dubai.
According to this television station, the co-pilot of Flydubai Airlines who attacked the captain has been identified as Hamam al-Hammami, 29, an Omani national.
The extremist documents discovered in 2024 belonged to al-Hammami, who was then working as a co-pilot for Oman Air.
Following that incident, the pilot was demoted to an administrative position at Oman Air.
Investigators have yet to determine why al-Hammami was allowed to pilot the Flydubai flight as co-pilot.
This Omani citizen is cooperating with the investigation and has stated that he intended to crash the plane into Israel.
Al-Hammami is currently being held in custody in the UAE, while authorities continue to investigate the incident, including reviewing operational and security procedures, ABC News reported.
