Add a home

The house of Mr. Nguyen Trong Quan, a veteran in An Son village, Bac Thanh Mien commune, used to be a source of worry for his family whenever it rained heavily . The walls and roof were dilapidated, leaking, and the foundation was sinking, while difficult economic conditions meant that repairs had to be postponed many times.

At the end of August 2026, the house was renovated with items including roof replacement, wall plastering, painting, and floor tiling, at a total cost of over 105 million VND. Of this amount, the City Labor Union contributed 50 million VND; the Veterans Association of the commune, along with other organizations, members, and the family, contributed funds, materials, and labor.

On the day the house was completed, Mr. Quan was moved by the collective efforts of his comrades. “I’m very happy, but what touched me most was that my comrades still remembered me. Everyone contributed a little – some contributed money, some contributed labor, and some came to encourage and help. The house has been renovated, but what’s more precious is that I feel the camaraderie remains intact after all these years,” Mr. Quan said.

In My Dong village, Nam Thanh Mien commune, veteran Bui Van Cu also recently received assistance for house repairs. His wife passed away, his two children are struggling financially, and he himself is frequently ill and no longer able to work. The dilapidated condition of his house has added to his worries.

Starting in July 2026, the house will undergo repairs including roof replacement, wall and ceiling repairs, floor repairs, electrical and plumbing system repairs, outbuildings, and doors, with a total cost of over 291 million VND. The City Labor Union contributed 50 million VND; the remaining amount was covered by the Veterans Association, local authorities, branch associations, and the family.

Each house has its own circumstances and budget, but the common thread is that when a veteran faces housing difficulties, those who once shared the same military uniform come together to help.

Extending the bonds of camaraderie .

In addition to repair assistance, some special cases also received support for building new houses, including Mr. Vu Truong Khai, a disabled veteran of category 1/4 in La Xa village, Nguyen Luong Bang commune. Having lived for many years in a dilapidated house, he faced difficulties in raising the funds to build a new one.

After approximately 5 months of construction, the new 75 m² house was completed. The General Department of Logistics and Technical Services provided 80 million VND; the Veterans Association of the city's Party agencies contributed 5 million VND; and the local authorities and the commune's Veterans Association provided additional support. The family, children, grandchildren, and veteran association members, along with the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin, also contributed funds and labor to ensure the project was completed quickly.

“During our time in the military, we overcame the most difficult times together. I never thought that many years later, upon returning to civilian life, I would still receive such affection from my comrades. This house is very precious to me because in every aspect of life, there is the sharing of those who once wore the same military uniform,” Mr. Khai said emotionally when mentioning the help of his fellow soldiers.

According to Colonel Dinh Van Truy, Chairman of the Hai Phong City Veterans Association, to date, the association at all levels has supported the construction and repair of 17 "Comradeship Houses" for members in difficult circumstances. From now until the end of the year, the association strives to provide more support, raising the total to 20 houses, with support ranging from 30 to 60 million VND per house.

"Each case receiving support has a different situation, but the common thread is that these comrades have dedicated their time to serving in the military and are now facing housing difficulties. We believe that supporting the 'Comradeship House' program is not only about helping a family have a safe place to live, but also about fulfilling our responsibility and showing our affection for our fellow soldiers," Colonel Dinh Van Truy affirmed.

To complete these houses, the Veterans' Association at all levels coordinated and mobilized various resources. Besides direct financial support, localities also mobilized members, organizations, families, and clans to participate in various ways. In some cases, veteran members directly contributed labor, helping families reduce construction and repair costs.

For soldiers who have gone through war, in their twilight years, a safe home can help alleviate some of their worries about life. And for those who provide support, each completed house is also a practical way to preserve the camaraderie of those who once shared the same military uniform.
