Specifically, sales of gasoline-powered vehicles (excluding hybrids and other electrified vehicles) reached 20.25 million units, a 10% decrease compared to the same period last year. This group's market share fell to 49%, below the 50% mark for the first time since automobiles became widely available in the 1920s.

Meanwhile, electric vehicles (EVs) continued their strong growth, reaching 6.87 million units, a 12% increase and accounting for 17% of the global market. Rising oil prices due to tensions in the Middle East are believed to be one of the factors driving consumers to switch to EVs, thanks to their lower operating costs.

The decline in petrol car sales was evident in major markets such as China and Europe, where sales fell by 26% and 13% respectively. Conversely, Europe recorded a 32% increase in EV sales, while Southeast Asia and several other regions also experienced strong growth.

Overall, the global automotive industry is witnessing a rapid shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles, with hybrid vehicle sales also increasing by 10% to 7.27 million units.

Experts believe that while the pace of conversion depends on policy, the long-term market trend is clearly leaning towards the electrification of transportation.
