According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Yo Jong, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said that the country conducted a strategic weapons firing exercise in the East Sea in the early morning of October 3.

The exercise involved the use of medium-range strategic missiles. Leader Kim Jong Un supervised the drill.

Earlier that day, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced that North Korea had launched at least one ballistic missile into the East Sea from the Wonsan area on North Korea's east coast.

According to the JCS, the missile traveled more than 700 km. From Tokyo, a Japanese government source said the missile is believed to have fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said that senior diplomats from the country, along with those from the United States and Japan, held a telephone conversation to discuss joint response measures following North Korea's missile launch.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, those participating in the phone call included Baek Yong Jin, Director-General of the Korean Peninsula Policy Bureau; David Wilezol, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Northeast Asia; and Takashi Ariyoshi, a senior official from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the same day, the South Korean Presidential Office announced that the National Security Office (NSO) of the Presidential Office had held an emergency meeting to discuss North Korea's missile launch.

The NSO stated that North Korea's missile launch violated United Nations Security Council resolutions and called on Pyongyang to immediately cease such actions.
