In Ninh Phuoc commune, a new feature in this year's Katê Festival is the integration of activities with the first Bau Truc Cham Pottery Festival. According to Ms. Che Hoang Thu Hao, this combination aims to create more space to showcase Cham culture, traditional craft villages, and distinctive local products; while also providing locals and tourists with many experiences during the festival.
According to the plan, from October 10th to 12th, Ninh Phuoc commune will organize an exhibition space showcasing Cham pottery art; displaying pottery products, brocade weaving, OCOP products, and local cuisine. In addition, there will be sports competitions, folk games, children's painting, beautiful Cham calligraphy, Cham folk singing, graceful Cham girls, and pottery skills demonstrations. On the evening of October 10th, an art program titled "The Soul of Bau Truc Pottery" will take place; and on October 11th, a scientific seminar on preserving and promoting the artistic value of Cham pottery will be held.
Integrating traditional crafts into the festival activities helps to connect the festival space more closely with community life. In Bau Truc and My Nghiep, pottery and brocade weaving are still maintained daily. During the festival days, locals and tourists can meet artisans, watch pottery and brocade weaving demonstrations, learn about the product creation process, and hear stories associated with traditional crafts. Currently, the Bau Truc Cham Community Tourism Board, the Bau Truc Pottery Cooperative, and the My Nghiep Brocade Weaving Cooperative are actively renovating the space, preparing for craft demonstrations, and introducing characteristic products.
From October 5th to 15th, the Po Klong Garai Tower National Special Monument will host an exhibition of images and artifacts related to the Katê festival; Cham temples and towers; My Nghiep weaving; and Bau Truc pottery. The Po Rome Tower National Monument will also feature activities introducing Cham culture. "Along with serving the rituals, the Provincial Cultural Heritage Conservation Center also focuses on providing explanations and exhibits to help people and tourists better understand the relics and the values of Cham culture. Specialized departments are assigned to prepare facilities, maintain cleanliness, welcome and guide visitors, and coordinate security during the festival days," said Mr. Nguyen Trung Nghia.
The Katê festival is fast approaching. The sounds of ginang drums and saranai horns resound in Cham villages and at temples and towers, signaling the start of the traditional festival that the Cham people, along with many locals and tourists, are eagerly awaiting.
Katê is an important traditional festival of the Cham people who follow Brahmanism, celebrated annually on the 1st day of the 7th month of the Cham calendar. The festival is closely linked to the religious, spiritual, and community life of the Cham people, practiced from temples and towers to villages and families. In 2017, the Cham Katê festival was included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, under the category of traditional festivals.
