According to the Yomiuri newspaper, Koala Mattress held a sleeping competition called "Matt Race" in Tokyo on October 5th, where contestants competed to find the fastest and most stable sleeper.

Contestants will wear brainwave monitoring devices to measure three factors: sleep quality, time to fall asleep, and sleep consistency throughout the competition. These indicators will be combined into a sleep score using a formula developed by the organizers, and the person with the highest total score will be declared the winner.

The first prize, worth 2.22 million Yen, was a wordplay on the three characters "Zzz," often used to indicate sleep status in text messages. The second-place winner also received a prize of 220,000 Yen.

"Some contestants seemed to fall asleep almost immediately, while others struggled due to the unfamiliar environment, cameras, and other activities taking place at the testing site. The organizers also requested that contestants not intentionally arrive sleep-deprived to gain an advantage," Japanese media reported.

Despite being the first of its kind, the competition attracted considerable public attention, with an application-to-slot ratio of 800:1. Contestants ranged in age from 20 to 50, including both men and women.

According to the organizers, the competition aims to raise public awareness about ensuring quality sleep. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Japanese sleep an average of only 7 hours and 24 minutes per day, among the lowest in the world.
