Oil prices edged lower after news that European leaders agreed to release diesel fuel from stockpiles to lower fuel prices. The global price trends suggest that domestic gasoline prices could rise sharply next week.

On the morning of October 3rd, fuel prices saw a slight decrease; Brent crude fell 6 cents, or 0.06%, to $102.25 per barrel; WTI crude fell $1.76, or 1.9%, to $91.11 per barrel.

However, overall for the week, Brent crude oil prices rose 0.11%, while WTI crude oil prices fell 1.6%.

On social media, President Donald Trump announced that Europe had agreed to release a large amount of diesel fuel from its strategic reserves. Previously, Trump had warned that the US could impose a ban on diesel exports, a move believed to put significant pressure on the global energy market.

Analysts believe that Europe is vulnerable if the US imposes a ban on diesel exports. EU governments have decided to release 50 million barrels of diesel from their reserves, while member states of the International Energy Agency (IEA) will also release an additional 50 million barrels of crude oil.

According to this proposal, Europe would release a portion of its diesel reserves within 20 days. However, it is unclear whether the G7 countries will agree on the volume of fuel to be released.

According to Ole Hansen, Director of Commodity Strategy at Saxo Bank, the latest developments indicate that the main pressure on the energy market is no longer on crude oil supply, as oil flows from the Middle East are recovering, but rather on the supply of refined products. Speaking to Reuters, he stated that refining activity is being constrained by declining capacity and production in the Middle East and Russia.

However, analysts believe that continued release of oil reserves could be enough to bring the market back to a state of slight oversupply, if the recovery in supply from the Middle East is sustained.

Domestically, global price trends are causing forecasts for gasoline and diesel prices to continue fluctuating next week. It is predicted that gasoline prices may rise sharply while diesel prices may fall slightly.
