Gold prices plunge again amid rising pressure from US bond yields.
After rising more than 1% at the start of the session, world gold prices unexpectedly reversed course and closed Friday in the red. The US dollar and high US Treasury yields continued to limit gold's attractiveness.
By 2:33 PM EDT, spot gold prices were down 0.9% to $4,140.06 per ounce. At this level, the precious metal is down approximately 3.4% for the week as a whole.
On the US futures market, gold futures prices fell 1% and closed at $4,162.30 per ounce.
A notable factor putting pressure on the market is the bond market. Yields on 10-year and 30-year US Treasury bonds rose to their highest levels since 2002 in the previous session. The US dollar, despite a slight decline during the day, is still on track to complete a week of gains.
The late-session decline was a stark contrast to the early part of the day, when gold had risen over 1% thanks to the less-than-positive US September jobs report.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the economy added only 29,000 non-farm jobs in September. This figure is significantly lower than the 90,000 jobs that economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted.
The number of jobs created in August was also revised down to 133,000, instead of the previously announced increase of 162,000.
Weak labor data helped reduce market expectations that the Fed will continue to raise interest rates. However, according to Han Tan of Bybit, gold investors are not yet ready to bet heavily on a new uptrend because the Fed still prioritizes the fight against inflation.
In the coming months, the performance of precious metals is expected to depend significantly on how the Fed balances the risks of weakening employment and its inflation control goals.
Since the end of February, gold prices have fallen by more than 20%. Concerns that conflict in the Middle East could add to inflationary pressure have increased the likelihood that interest rates in the US will have to remain high for longer.
Nevertheless, the latest inflation data was lower than expected, and the fact that some Fed officials did not support raising interest rates in October has significantly altered market expectations.
CME FedWatch now shows the probability of the Fed raising interest rates this month is only about 22%, compared to nearly 70% earlier this week.
According to Marex expert Edward Meir, the technical chart of gold still does not show clear positive signals. Prices risk continuing to fall if expectations of a new interest rate hike cycle return.
Following the same trend as gold, silver fell 0.8% to $60.36 per ounce; platinum dropped 2% to $1,692.90 per ounce; and palladium lost 0.5% to $1,165.75 per ounce.
