The value of a sincere heart amidst a self-centered city.

Attending the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, director Celine Song's film "Materialists" reflects a sharp perspective on modern social life. Avoiding sentimental romantic clichés, the film performs a subtle yet raw dissection of the "materialization" of emotions within the financial center of New York.

Following the global success of "Past Lives," Celine Song continues to demonstrate her keen social insight by placing the story in the world of high-society matchmaking in Manhattan. The central character is Lucy, a renowned matchmaker who makes a living by classifying personalities, quantifying emotions, and connecting the elite in perfect marriages. Ironically, this woman, holding the handbook of love valuation, finds herself caught between two opposing forces: a passionate but financially unstable past love, Harry (played by Pedro Pascal), and a seemingly perfect millionaire, John (played by Chris Evans).

Under the direction of Celine Song, Dakota Johnson embodies an elegant, alluring, and intellectually sophisticated urban beauty. She appears in expensive, minimalist outfits, possesses a perfectly diplomatic smile, and exudes absolute control, but beneath this flawless exterior lies a vacant gaze reflecting emotional exhaustion. Johnson's beauty in the film isn't meant to be visually pleasing; it's a metaphor for the modern young intellectual class, who arm themselves with a pragmatic, rational facade to mask their profound fear of the fragility of their hearts.

Johnson's performance is powerful in its subtle balance between calculated rationality and passionate instinct. Each hesitant glance, each choked silence as the character confronts the two men, accurately reflects the tragedy of a generation: where romance is weighed against portfolio analysis, status, and economic security. Her harmonious performances alongside Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans transform a seemingly ordinary love triangle into a fierce internal conflict between the primal call of emotion and the assimilationist pressures of consumerism.

"Materialists" is a profound reflection of society's contemporary malaise. Celine Song and Dakota Johnson expose the cruel paradox of the 21st-century urban landscape: as people attempt to transform everything, including loyalty and love, into quantifiable assets, they inadvertently deprive the soul of its only means of salvation.

This portrayal marks a significant step forward for actress Dakota Johnson in establishing her independent acting abilities. Completely shedding the commercially-oriented sex appeal of her early career, she brings to the character a quiet dignity: the portrait of a woman who dares to confront her own selfishness in order to rediscover the primal value of love in a world increasingly dominated by materialism.
