According to Axios , the meeting lasted for hours on October 2nd and was not announced in advance by the Trump administration. The last time a similar meeting took place was in June 2025, just days before Israel launched a war against Iran .

Vice President JD Vance chaired the meeting. Attendees included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, White House envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.

A U.S. official said issues related to the Middle East crisis had been decided or at least discussed in depth. The White House declined to comment on the meeting.

The meeting took place as negotiations between Washington and Tehran stalled. President Trump is considering the possibility of resuming large-scale military operations against Iran if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.

On October 2nd, when asked by reporters about his next steps regarding Iran, Trump declined to elaborate, but said that the situation was progressing very well and that Iran "is not doing well."

"If I told you, you'd get a big news story. But you'll see. Things are going very well. Iran isn't doing well," Trump said.

Meanwhile, the US President is being asked to participate in the Saudi-planned offensive against Houthi forces in Yemen.

However, according to US officials, Trump is currently still leaning towards not directly participating, although this stance could change.

Meanwhile, on October 3, Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Hossein Mohbi called on Trump to "learn from experience" from the confrontation with the Houthi in Yemen and accept Tehran's conditions.

Mohbi argued that Washington had realized it couldn't resolve the Yemen issue militarily and should adopt a similar approach with Iran. According to him, after about 16 months of negotiations with Tehran, the US has not achieved its stated goals and is facing numerous economic, political , and social problems.

"The US president is using a similar experience with Iran. He was involved in negotiations with Iran for about 16 months and not only failed to achieve any of his stated goals, but also encountered numerous economic, political, and social problems. Therefore, it would be best for him to learn from past experience and accept Iran's conditions," Mohbi said.
