According to a six-year agreement announced on October 6th between Amazon and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the 79th Primetime Emmy Awards, scheduled for September 2027, will be the first to air on Prime Video . However, viewers do not need a Prime Video subscription to watch the awards ceremony; the program will still be free to watch.

The Emmy Awards have been broadcast annually on one of the four major U.S. television networks—ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC—since 1955. For the past 30 years, broadcasting rights have alternated among these four networks under a mechanism commonly known as the “Wheel Deal.” NBC was the first network to broadcast the Emmys nationwide and also broadcast the awards ceremony last month.

The Emmys' shift to a single online platform for six years comes amid increasingly fragmented television audiences and a sharp decline in viewership for major awards ceremonies. The Emmys once attracted over 20 million viewers at their peak, but now only around 7 million.

Amazon hopes Prime Video can help the Emmys reach a younger audience, while also leveraging the platform's wealth of television content to promote nominated programs and draw viewers to the awards ceremony. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said being able to promote nominated works throughout the year will help generate more interest in the Emmys.

This decision also reflects a rapid shift in how major entertainment events reach audiences. In December 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Oscars would be broadcast on YouTube starting in 2029, ending a decades-long relationship with television networks.

The president of the Emmy Awards, Cris Abrego, believes that having a single long-term partner will help organizers and broadcast platforms work together more effectively. He emphasized that the core goal of the Emmys remains to honor outstanding television programs, regardless of the platform or screen they are presented to viewers.
