According to the Da Nang City Center for Disease Control (CDC), between September 29th and October 1st, the city recorded two additional cases of imported malaria with epidemiological links to countries in the African region.

Epidemiological investigations revealed that one case had stayed in Nigeria, and the other had been in Ivory Coast before returning to Vietnam. Test results confirmed both cases were infected with Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Both cases are currently being treated at Da Nang Hospital.

The CDC recommends that healthcare facilities increase their efforts to identify individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, or unexplained fever.

The CDC further stated that Plasmodium falciparum is a parasite capable of causing severe malaria, malignant malaria, and dangerous complications if not detected, diagnosed, and treated promptly. The recording of imported malaria cases highlights the need for enhanced surveillance, early detection, timely treatment, and proactive prevention of secondary transmission risks in the community.

The unit requests that regional health centers and commune/ward health stations strengthen efforts to detect individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, or unexplained fever, especially those with a history of travel to, from, or stay in, or who have recently returned from, areas where malaria is endemic.

Groups that need attention include workers, foreigners, immigrants, business travelers, tourists , or those returning from countries where malaria is endemic, particularly in Africa.

In suspected cases, healthcare facilities should perform blood smear tests and/or rapid malaria diagnostic tests. If positive or if there is suspected epidemiological risk related to a malaria endemic area, it must be reported promptly to coordinate investigation, treatment, and implementation of prevention and control measures.

Individuals who have recently returned from malaria-endemic areas, especially African countries, should seek immediate medical attention if they experience fever, chills, sweating, or unusual fatigue. When seeking medical help, they should proactively inform healthcare professionals about their travel and accommodation history abroad so that appropriate epidemiological information can be gathered and appropriate tests can be ordered.

Since the beginning of the year, Da Nang City has recorded 4 cases of malaria imported from abroad, all confirmed to be infected with the Plasmodium falciparum parasite.
