Previously, on June 26th, the patient was admitted to the hospital with acute subdural hematoma, causing increased intracranial pressure and threatening their life... Given the patient's critical condition, the surgical team urgently performed a craniotomy to relieve pressure and remove the hematoma in order to reduce intracranial pressure.

The skull fragment removed during surgery is sterile-treated and then transferred to the Tissue Bank of Hanoi Medical University for preservation according to regulations, to be used in skull reconstruction surgery after the patient's condition stabilizes.

After nearly three months of treatment, monitoring, and recovery, the patient's brain edema completely subsided. Following examination and assessment, the doctors decided to perform a re-grafting of the patient's own skull fragment.

The surgery lasted over an hour. The doctors carefully dissected the fibrous tissue around the dura mater, returned the preserved skull fragment to its original position, and securely fixed it to fit the cranial defect.

According to doctors, autologous skull grafting after decompressive craniotomy helps reconstruct the skull structure, protect the brain, and improve the patient's aesthetics. Because it uses the patient's own skull bone, the method has advantages in terms of biocompatibility and cost savings compared to some artificial materials.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Binh, Head of the Surgery Department at Cam Pha General Hospital, the goal of treatment is not just to save patients' lives in the emergency phase, but also to restore their physical appearance, function, and quality of life, helping them return to normal activities.

Following the skull transplant surgery, the patient was alert, recovering well, the surgical wound was dry and healed smoothly, there were no neurological complications, and the patient was discharged from the hospital and returned home with their family.

According to Cam Pha General Hospital, the continuous implementation of steps from decompression craniotomy in emergency situations, preservation of skull fragments, to skull grafting in the later stages demonstrates the hospital's ability to implement a relatively comprehensive treatment process for traumatic brain injury.
