A 31-year-old man was admitted to the Emergency Department of Vietnam-Korea Hospital in Da Nang after a traffic accident. The patient was conscious and had stable vital signs, but had an open wound on his right lower leg with a metallic foreign object deeply embedded in the soft tissue.

Notably, at the scene, instead of trying to remove the kickstand from the victim's leg, people cut the kickstand off the motorcycle, leaving the foreign object in place, and took the injured person to the hospital.

X-ray results showed no damage to the tibia. However, due to the deep penetration of the foreign object, doctors assessed a risk of damage to blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and muscles. The Emergency Department, in coordination with the Trauma Surgery Department, ordered emergency surgery.

During the surgery, the team explored the path of the foreign object, controlled vital structures, removed the kickstand, excised damaged tissue, and cleaned the wound to minimize the risk of infection.

Dr. Trinh Anh Hoang, Head of the Trauma Surgery Department at Viet-Korean Hospital in Da Nang, said that in cases of foreign objects penetrating the limbs, it is not advisable to attempt to remove the object immediately. The trajectory of the foreign object and its relationship to blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and muscles must be assessed before intervention.

Following the surgery, the patient continued to be monitored and received wound care. By October 2nd, their health was stable, the wound was healing well, and they were able to walk.

Doctors advise that when encountering someone with a large foreign object lodged in their body, do not attempt to remove or push the object out yourself, minimize its movement, stabilize the injured area, and quickly transport the victim to a medical facility capable of providing surgical emergency care.

Attempting to remove a foreign object yourself can further damage blood vessels or nerves, or cause serious bleeding.
