Between September 29th and October 1st alone, the city recorded two additional cases with a history of returning from the African region.
According to the Da Nang City Center for Disease Control (CDC), both new patients are currently being treated at Da Nang Hospital. Epidemiological investigations revealed that one case had stayed in Nigeria, and the other in Ivory Coast before returning to Vietnam. Tests confirmed that both contracted malaria caused by P. falciparum.
P. falciparum is a parasite that can cause severe malaria and dangerous complications if not detected and treated promptly. Imported malaria cases also necessitate monitoring for the risk of secondary infections in the community.
The Da Nang CDC has requested that regional health centers and commune/ward health stations strengthen efforts to identify individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, or unexplained fever, especially those with a history of travel to, from, or stay in areas where malaria is endemic.
The groups that need attention include workers, foreigners, immigrants, business travelers, tourists , or those returning from countries where malaria is endemic, especially in Africa.
Suspected cases should be tested using blood smears and/or rapid malaria diagnostic tests according to professional guidelines. Positive or suspected cases with epidemiological factors should be reported for investigation, treatment, and implementation of appropriate prevention and control measures.
Individuals who have recently returned from malaria-endemic areas and experience unusual symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, or fatigue should seek medical attention. During the examination, they should inform healthcare professionals of their travel and accommodation history abroad so that they can assess epidemiological factors and order appropriate tests.
People also need to take proactive measures to prevent mosquito bites when traveling to or returning from areas where malaria is endemic.
