The 2026 Asian Games brought Wang Xiyu the women's singles tennis championship and a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Wang Xiyu defeated Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-1 in the final in Nagoya. The match lasted 66 minutes, securing the 25-year-old's first Asian Games women's singles gold medal.

Earlier, Wang Xiyu caused an upset by defeating the top seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in the semi-finals. Wang won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the final.

According to AFP, tennis is one of seven sports at the 2026 Asian Games where the champion is awarded a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Therefore, the gold medal in Nagoya simultaneously secured Wang Xiyu a ticket to the Olympics.

In the final, Wang quickly established a lead over Zhang Shuai. The young player won the first set 6-2 and continued his dominance in the second set with a score of 6-1.

Meanwhile, 37-year-old Zhang Shuai won the silver medal in the women's singles. This is her second Asian Games silver medal after her achievement in Jakarta in 2018. Zhang has also won numerous Grand Slam titles in women's doubles.

For Wang Xiyu, winning the 2026 Asian Games marks a significant milestone in her career. The gold medal also opens up the opportunity for her to continue competing in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
