This is not only a high-stakes showdown between two of Asia's top teams, but also the third consecutive time that South Korea and Japan have clashed in the gold medal match at the Asian Games.
In the semi-finals, defending champions South Korea U23 showed their mettle against the physically demanding, high-pressure style of play from China U23, winning 2-1 to reach the final for the fourth consecutive time.
Furthermore, looking at South Korea's journey throughout the Asian Games, the team from the land of kimchi has always known how to punish opponents thanks to their ability to capitalize on opportunities or moments of individual brilliance.
Having won the title in 2014, 2018, and 2022, the South Korean team is now on the verge of making history by completing a "poker" (four consecutive championships).
Notably, in both of the two most recent finals, South Korea's defeated opponent was Japan (both with a score of 2-1).
On the home side, the Japanese U23 team had to endure 120 breathtaking minutes and a tense penalty shootout against the Uzbekistan U23 team.
Having conceded a goal in the 8th minute, the home team persistently besieged the opponent's goal and managed to equalize 1-1 in the final minutes thanks to Sena Ishibashi, before defeating the Central Asian representative 9-8 on penalties.
The final match, taking place on October 3rd, promises to be incredibly fierce, pitting a resilient South Korean U23 team aiming to defend their title against a highly motivated Japanese U23 team playing at home. Japan is determined to take revenge and break their losing streak against their long-standing rivals.
