Reading is beneficial at any age, especially for students.

A key point to remember is that reading should not be forced or imposed upon children, but rather encouraged and nurtured to spark their interest. Besides educational books that provide knowledge, parents should also buy books that align with their children's interests. Importantly, adults serve as role models, so parents should read with their children or discuss the book's content within the family.

Ms. Tran Ngoc Thuy, residing in Binh Thuy Ward, Can Tho City, shared: "From the moment my child started learning to speak, I bought some simple children's comic books to read to her, gradually creating a habit of reading to her every night before bedtime. As she grew older, I bought more books, and through books, stories, and characters, I easily taught her small lessons, which she enjoyed and absorbed very well. When she learned to read, I let her read on her own and then asked her about the content and meaning of the story. Gradually, I switched from comic books to written stories, buying more children's literature for her to read."

According to Ms. Tran Ngoc Thuy, her child's love of reading grows as she gets older: literature, history, skills, science ... "Besides the books the family buys, my child also borrows books from the school library and the city library to read. Thanks to reading so much, my child's literature skills are improving, and her knowledge is constantly increasing," Ms. Ngoc Thuy added.

For Ms. Phan Thanh Hoa, residing in Cai Khe Ward, Can Tho City, encouraging her child to read has been more challenging. When her child was young, she enjoyed reading, but upon entering primary school, she only read comic books and refused to read regular novels. Ms. Hoa recounted: “I chose 'The Adventures of the Cricket' by writer To Hoai to read to my child. After reading a few chapters, I stopped at the most exciting part. If she wanted to hear more, I told her to read it herself to find out what happened next. She then finished the book on her own. I bought other books and applied the same method: reading the first few chapters and then letting her read the rest. Sometimes, when she was lazy and refused to read, I used toys or things she liked as rewards if she finished a book.”

When her children reached middle and high school, and they needed to buy things, Ms. Hoa suggested that they would be rewarded for reading. Now that her children are in university, they no longer need rewards to read; they read according to their needs, buying useful and suitable books online and only reading when they have free time or feel like it.

Cultivating a reading habit in children is a long journey that requires patience, perseverance, and flexibility from parents. With encouragement and the formation of this habit, children will gradually discover pure joy in each page, thereby opening up new horizons of knowledge for their future.
