The news that writer, literary researcher, and translator Nhat Chieu was hospitalized due to a heart attack from yesterday to today has received much attention from the literary community in Ho Chi Minh City.
The health of writer Nhat Chieu has stabilized.
Speaking to Tuổi Trẻ newspaper that afternoon, the writer recounted that due to the recent heavy rains in Ho Chi Minh City, his house on Dinh Bo Linh Street was flooded up to his knees.
Besides the family's belongings, one of his biggest worries was the damage to his book collection.
"During the rainy season, water often gets into the house, and the wooden bookshelves are old, so they could easily collapse, ruining all the books. That's what I fear most," the writer said.
In the early morning of October 2nd, noticing that water was flooding into his house, he went up and down the stairs to rearrange and move his belongings, but he experienced intense chest pain and only managed to cry out so his family could hear him and take him to the hospital.
Nhat Chieu informed his friends, colleagues, and students that he is still in the hospital recovering, but his health has improved.
"The heart attack is going well, but the doctor is keeping me for further treatment because they've discovered a few age-related illnesses," the writer said humorously.
When asked how many books he currently owns, the writer said, "I can't remember exactly, but it's probably more than 10,000." This is his "treasure" after more than 40 years of teaching, researching literature, and writing, so he cherishes it very much.
