The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that its forces attacked the North Bridge in Kyiv, believing it to be a route used by the Ukrainian army to move troops.
"The Russian Armed Forces continue to attack Ukrainian infrastructure and vessels being used for military purposes. Last night, drone attacks struck the North Bridge over the Dnipro River in Kyiv. This is a route that facilitates the movement of troops and the transport of military supplies by the Ukrainian army," the statement said.
Earlier on October 1st and 2nd, Russian forces attacked Kyiv's South Bridge (Pivdennyi) with drones. In total, Russian aircraft targeted the bridge at least five times over a 36-hour period.
All traffic on the South Bridge, including road and tram traffic, has been temporarily suspended following these attacks.
In an article on Tass , Boris Rozhin, an expert at the Center for Information and Geopolitical Studies, stated that Russian forces are neutralizing vulnerable sections of bridges in Ukraine instead of completely destroying them.
"It is indeed very difficult to demolish such massive structures. However, the current campaign shows a completely different approach: systematically disabling the vulnerable parts of the bridge structure," Rozhin wrote.
According to him, this approach stems from the fact that the bridges in Ukraine are very structurally sound because they were built during the Soviet era.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on October 2 that Russia's repeated attacks on bridges in Kyiv are part of a broader campaign to damage the Ukrainian economy by hindering the movement of people and goods through the city, and disrupting daily life in the capital.
