Are chives really as good for health as many people believe? What are the benefits of eating chives regularly, how much is appropriate to eat, and who should be cautious when consuming this vegetable? (Dinh Thi Hang - Hanoi ).
Dr. Pham Viet Hoang, former lecturer at the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, advises:
Chives not only add aroma to dishes but also provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial plant compounds. This is a versatile herb that can easily be added to everyday meals.
In Vietnamese meals, chives appear in many familiar dishes such as fried eggs, tofu soup, porridge, and stir-fries. This vegetable has a distinctive aroma, pairs well with many foods, and has certain nutritional value.
Adding fiber helps support digestion.
Chives provide fiber, an important component for the proper functioning of the digestive system. Adequate fiber intake from green vegetables supports bowel movements and helps prevent constipation.

You can incorporate this vegetable into a varied diet along with other sources of fiber such as leafy greens, fruits, legumes, and whole grains.
Contains many beneficial plant compounds.
Chives belong to the onion family of vegetables and contain sulfur compounds and many antioxidants. Some studies on vegetables in this group suggest that these plant compounds may contribute to protecting cells from oxidative stress.
However, eating chives cannot replace medication. The value of this vegetable lies primarily in its contribution to a balanced and varied diet.
It can be prepared into many simple dishes.
Chives can be used fresh or cooked in many dishes. Chive omelets are a simple and easy dish to prepare. Finely chop the chives, mix them with eggs, and fry until just cooked.
Tofu and minced meat soup with chives has a light and refreshing taste, perfect for a family meal. You can add the chives last so they are just cooked through, retaining their vibrant green color and aroma.
Adding chives to porridge is also a good option for a change of taste. Chives should be added when the porridge is almost cooked and served immediately.
In traditional Eastern medicine, chives are considered to have a pungent, sweet taste and a warm nature, and are used in several traditional remedies. However, these beliefs do not mean that chives can treat or prevent all diseases.
Please note that chives are a food, so they should be used in moderation as part of a varied diet. People with specific medical conditions or those undergoing medication should not use them as a substitute for other treatments.
