What was thought to be a simple cosmetic procedure turned into hospitalization for a nearly 40-year-old male patient after a portion of his nasal wing became necrotic just 24 hours after receiving filler injections. (Illustrative photo: Anh Thông.) |
A male patient, nearly 40 years old, had to be hospitalized after receiving filler injections, as his nose hadn't even looked as good as he'd hoped due to swelling, pain, pus discharge, and partial necrosis of the nasal wing.
Nasal necrosis just one day after filler injection.
According to Dr. Vu Dinh Tam, a specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Central Dermatology Hospital, the patient underwent filler injections at a spa. Just one day after the procedure, the nasal area began to swell, become painful, and discharge a lot of pus. A portion of the nasal wing showed signs of necrosis.
Noticing unusual symptoms, the patient went to the National Dermatology Hospital for examination and was admitted for treatment.

Upon examination, Dr. Tam noted that the patient's nasal area had partial necrosis of the nasal wing, inflammation, and numerous pus-filled pimples throughout the entire nasal region. After a week of treatment, the patient's condition stabilized and they were discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Tam, this case demonstrates that complications after filler injections can appear very quickly and the extent of damage can be more serious than common post-injection reactions such as swelling, bruising, or mild pain.
Fillers are increasingly used in cosmetic procedures, with nasal injections being a popular choice for improving facial shape. However, this is not simply a beauty procedure but a medical intervention that can cause complications if performed incorrectly or at unqualified facilities.
Blood clots can cause necrosis and vision loss.
According to MSc. Dr. Vu Dinh Tam, one of the most serious complications of filler injections is vascular occlusion.
This condition can occur when filler enters a blood vessel or compresses it, reducing or stopping blood flow to the tissue. When tissue is deprived of sufficient blood and oxygen for an extended period, the damage can progress to necrosis.
The nasal area requires particular caution because the facial vascular system has a complex structure, with branches connecting to the vascular system around the eyes. Therefore, in addition to tissue damage and necrosis, in severe cases, vascular occlusion due to fillers can lead to vision loss, stroke, or even death.
Besides vascular occlusion, filler injections that are not performed under sterile conditions or without proper procedure can cause infection, abscesses, tissue inflammation, skin damage, and scarring. These complications may require prolonged treatment and affect the aesthetic results in the long run.

According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to reduce the risk of complications, those performing filler injections need to have a thorough understanding of facial vascular anatomy, the indications and contraindications of fillers, safe injection techniques, and the ability to recognize and manage complications early.
Knowledge of anatomy and professional training are crucial in preventing, detecting, and managing vascular complications. Therefore, people should avoid filler injections at spas or facilities not authorized to perform medical procedures, even if the service is advertised as low-priced, quick, or with a "complication-free" guarantee.
Before undergoing the procedure, individuals should choose a licensed medical facility and research the expertise and experience of the practitioner. Additionally, they should inquire about the type of filler, its origin, and product information, and receive comprehensive advice on its benefits, limitations, and potential risks.
After the injection, if severe or rapidly increasing pain occurs, the skin at the injection site turns pale, purple, or blue, feels unusually cold, or shows signs of skin damage or necrosis, the patient should seek immediate medical attention instead of continuing to monitor at home.
In particular, symptoms such as blurred vision, eye pain, double vision, vision loss, weakness, paralysis, facial asymmetry, or difficulty speaking can be signs of serious complications. Patients need to quickly go to a medical facility capable of managing complications.
In cases of suspected thromboembolism, time is of the essence. Early detection and treatment can help limit tissue damage and reduce the risk of serious complications.
Doctors advise people not to choose unqualified facilities just to save money or believe advertisements. Filler injections should be performed at licensed medical facilities by qualified professionals to minimize risks and ensure safety.
