A weaker-than-expected US jobs report reduced the likelihood of a Fed interest rate hike in October, but US bond yields remained very high. These two opposing forces caused gold to surge at the start of the session before quickly reversing course.

Overall, SJC gold bars saw a slight decrease of 200,000 VND/ounce at most businesses. However, gold rings did not decrease uniformly: DOJI increased the price of rings, Phu Quy kept it unchanged, while PNJ decreased the price along with gold bars.

This differentiation shows that domestic retail prices are still significantly influenced by the supply and demand of each product, rather than reacting entirely to the ups and downs of the international market.

Global gold prices fell by $34 despite weak US jobs report.

According to data updated on the morning of October 3rd, world gold prices were around $4,141 per ounce, down $34 from $4,175 per ounce on the morning of October 2nd, equivalent to a decrease of approximately 0.81%.

Notably, the trading range during the session was very wide, from approximately $4,125 to $4,228 per ounce. This indicates that the market experienced a sharp reversal.

At the close of the US trading session, spot gold fell by approximately 0.9% to $4,140 per ounce, and lost about 3.4% overall for the week. The main pressure came from the US dollar and especially from high US Treasury yields.

This development occurred despite the US jobs report for September being significantly weaker than expected. The US economy added only 29,000 non-farm jobs, far below the 90,000 increase analysts had anticipated. The July and August figures were also revised downwards by a combined 60,000 jobs. The unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%, while wage growth slowed.

These data have significantly dampened expectations of a Fed rate hike at its October meeting. The market is now pricing in a probability of a rate increase at around 20-25%, far lower than the approximately 70% seen earlier in the week. The Fed raised interest rates by 0.25 percentage points in September to the 3.75-4% range, but policymakers now have further reason to wait for inflation data before deciding on the next step.

Typically, the prospect of the Fed not raising interest rates immediately would support gold. However, long-term bond yields remain a significant pressure. The yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds, after an initial decline, has risen back to around 5.28%. Prior to this, both 10-year and 30-year yields had reached their highest levels since 2002.

Oil prices also continue to be a key variable affecting inflation expectations. At the close of trading on October 2nd, Brent crude was at $102.25 per barrel, while WTI fell to $91.11 per barrel following the decision to release some fuel reserves in Europe. Despite the slight cooling in oil prices, supply risks and tensions in the Middle East remain sensitive to new information in the energy market.

Gold price forecast: The price may fluctuate around the current level at the end of the week.

Since October 3rd, 2026 falls on a Saturday, the international gold market was already on its weekend break. Therefore, the price of approximately $4,141 per ounce is primarily a reference price from the weekend closing price, rather than a price that is constantly fluctuating throughout the day.

With the international market reopening, the $4,120-$4,125/ounce range is the first area to watch, as it is close to the low of the previous session. If this range is breached, selling pressure could increase, pushing prices closer to the $4,100/ounce mark.

On the upside, gold first needs to break back above the $4,170-$4,180/ounce range. Further down, the $4,200-$4,230/ounce area is a notable resistance zone after the price briefly rose to $4,228/ounce during the session but failed to maintain it.

Thus, the short-term scenario still leans towards strong volatility and sideways movement, rather than the immediate formation of a new uptrend. Weak jobs reports provide support for gold, but bond yields above 5% remain a significant drag.

In the domestic market, the current selling price of SJC gold is commonly 144.1 million VND/ounce. Over the weekend, when there are no further fluctuations from the international market, domestic prices are likely to be more influenced by supply and demand and the listing policies of individual businesses.

Unless there are unusual fluctuations, the price of SJC gold bars is likely to continue to hover around 144 million VND/ounce for the selling price. A sharp increase within the day is uncertain, while downward pressure remains due to the recent week's approximately 3.4% drop in global gold prices.

Short-term buyers should still be aware of the buy-sell spread. The difference at SJC and PNJ is 3 million VND/ounce; at Phu Quy SJC it's approximately 3.3 million VND/ounce; at DOJI 9999 rings it's approximately 4 million VND/ounce and at BTMC SJC it's approximately 4.2 million VND/ounce.

This difference means that buyers would need a significant increase to compensate for the price difference if they resell within a short period.

Overall, the most important signal on the morning of October 3rd was that global gold prices failed to maintain their upward momentum after the weak US jobs report. The market is currently being pulled in two directions: the possibility of the Fed pausing interest rate hikes supports gold, while high bond yields continue to put pressure on it. These are likely to remain the two variables determining the direction of gold prices when international markets open for the new week.
