The first cold front of the season is moving south.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced that a cold air mass is moving southward. This is identified as the first cold air mass of the 2026-2027 winter season , appearing approximately 2-5 days earlier than the multi-year average.

According to forecasts, around late afternoon/evening of October 4th , the cold air mass will begin to affect the Northeast region, then spread to other areas in the North and from Thanh Hoa to Hue City.

As the cold air mass moves in, winds over land will shift to the northeast at level 2-3, and level 3-4 in coastal areas. From the night of October 4th to the morning of October 5th, Northern Vietnam is likely to experience moderate rain and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy rain.

Notably, from early morning on October 5th, the weather in Northern Vietnam began to turn noticeably colder. The lowest temperatures in Northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa are forecast to be generally 19-22°C , while in mountainous areas they will be 14-17°C , with some places experiencing freezing temperatures. Hanoi is also expected to feel the cold air from the morning of October 5th.

Therefore, October 3rd was not the day the cold air mass directly impacted the area , but it was the day before this weather pattern began to change the weather conditions in the North.

From scorching heat above 35°C to freezing cold in just a few days.

Before the cold front arrived, Northern Vietnam maintained relatively high temperatures on October 3rd.

In Hanoi, the highest temperature of the day is forecast to be 34-36°C , with hot and sunny weather. Northwestern and Northeastern Vietnam will generally experience temperatures of 32-35°C, with some areas exceeding 35°C. Showers and thunderstorms are possible in some areas in the late afternoon and evening.

The noticeable change will begin from the evening of October 4th. After the cold air mass arrives, the lowest temperatures in the Northern Delta and Thanh Hoa could drop to 19-22°C, while in the high mountainous areas they could be as low as 14-17°C.

This cold front therefore created a rather distinct shift in weather conditions: from sunny, even hot in some areas, on October 3rd to thunderstorms, northeasterly winds, and cold weather in the following days.

The northeast monsoon winds are gradually strengthening over the sea.

In addition to causing weather changes on land, the cold air mass also strengthens the northeasterly winds at sea.

From the morning of October 5th, in the Gulf of Tonkin, strong northeasterly winds of force 6, sometimes force 7, with gusts of force 8-9, will prevail; sea waves will be 2-3 meters high, and the sea will be rough.

From October 5th, the northern South China Sea will experience northeasterly winds of force 6-7, gusting to force 8, with waves 2-4 meters high. By October 6th, the strong wind area is forecast to expand to the entire northern South China Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands.

The meteorological agency warns that thunderstorms accompanied by cold air may bring tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. Localized heavy rainfall also poses a risk of flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes.

October 3rd: Northern Vietnam experiences hot weather before the arrival of a cold front.

On October 3rd, the most notable weather feature remained localized heatwaves in Northern and North Central Vietnam, while Southern Vietnam continued to experience thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.

However, the focus in the coming days will be on the first cold front of the season moving southward . From the evening of October 4th, the Northeast region will begin to be affected; subsequently, the affected area will expand to other parts of the North and from Thanh Hoa to Hue City.

From early morning on October 5th, Northern Vietnam experienced a cold spell, with lowest temperatures generally ranging from 19-22°C, and in some mountainous areas as low as 14-17°C. At sea, the northeast monsoon also intensified, causing rough seas in the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern South China Sea.
