Amazon has just introduced a new generation of basic Kindle. Priced from $149 , the device focuses on three main changes: a new design, faster processing speeds, and higher-end configuration options.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Kindle has a redesigned chassis. The screen is almost completely flat with bezels around it. This finish gives the device an appearance closer to the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft.
The screen size remains 6 inches. The pixel density stays at 300 ppi. This is also a familiar specification for basic Kindles in recent years.
The most notable upgrade lies in performance. Amazon claims the new Kindle is 30% faster than its predecessor. The difference is most noticeable when flipping pages and navigating the interface.
Tony Polanco, author of Tom's Guide , said the responsiveness improved during the experience. "It's not just a simple refresh," Polanco commented.
The standard version has 16 GB of internal memory. It's available in two colors: Ube and Graphite. Notably, this version still displays ads on the lock screen.
Amazon also offers a more premium version priced at $189 . This model features an aluminum casing, 32GB of storage, and is ad-free. It also supports magnetic attachments.
This is a clear difference compared to previous Kindle models. The previous basic Kindle line was primarily aimed at users who needed a simple, low-cost e-reader. The new generation adds more premium options while maintaining a compact size.
Despite numerous changes, the new Kindle is now in direct competition with its predecessor.
The Kindle 2024 is currently being sold by Amazon in the Essentials Bundle for $125 . This is $24 less than the standard new Kindle. The bundle also includes a cloth protective case.
The Kindle 2024 also uses a 6-inch screen with a resolution of 300 ppi. The backlight is 25% brighter than the 2022 generation. Amazon has also improved the contrast on this model.
Regarding battery life, Amazon claims the Kindle 2024 can last up to 6 weeks under certain conditions. In Tom's Guide 's testing, the device still had about 70% battery life after 2 weeks of use, with approximately one hour of use per day.
The current price difference makes older Kindles still attractive to cost-conscious users. Meanwhile, newer Kindles are better suited for those who want faster response times and a more modern design.
