According to the JCS, the missile was launched from Wonsan at 6:30 a.m. (local time), traveling approximately 700km.
The launch took place after Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a statement rejecting Seoul's demand for an apology regarding the landmine explosion at the border.
South Korea says that North Korean landmines caused an explosion that seriously injured two South Korean soldiers while they were conducting reconnaissance inside the 4-kilometer-wide demilitarized zone.
Earlier this week, the South Korean military demanded that North Korea apologize and take responsible measures for the explosion. Pyongyang vehemently denied any involvement, accusing Seoul of fabricating investigation results to shift blame onto North Korea.
On October 1st, President Lee Jae Myung pledged to persistently seek practical measures to reduce military tensions between South Korea and North Korea.
“My government will consistently pursue practical measures to reduce military tensions between the two Koreas. The knots in inter-Korean relations are extremely complex, but we will gradually, persistently, and patiently untangle them,” Lee said.
He argued that peace and prosperity must be built "with our own hands," emphasizing that "the surest form of security is one that makes conflict unnecessary, in other words, one that creates peace."
He also invited North Korea and Seoul to embark on "a path of restoring trust and resuming dialogue."
The South Korean president said he "remains deeply concerned" about the two soldiers injured in the landmine explosion, calling it a "regrettable incident."
On October 2nd, South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young proposed holding talks with North Korea to resolve issues along the border, after the South Korean military blamed North Korea for a landmine explosion.
Mr. Chung argued that the increasingly indistinct border was one of the main causes of the explosion in the DMZ.
Kim Yo Jong issued another statement denying responsibility for the incident, while also mocking President Lee's commitment to reducing military tensions between the two Koreas.
She also rejected Unification Minister Chung Dong-young's proposal for dialogue to clarify the Military Demarcation Line, calling it "one-sided rhetoric full of illusions, not worth responding to."
In recent years, North Korea has consistently taken tough actions against South Korea, after abandoning its goal of reunification and calling South Korea its "main enemy."
