The stage at Thang Long Imperial Citadel is grandly designed, combining traditional music with modern technology and lighting, reflecting the rich cultural identity of Vietnam.
The second World Culture Festival in Hanoi took place from October 1-4 at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, bringing together diverse cultures through art, cuisine, film, fashion , and creative experiences based on heritage.
With the theme "Convergence of Heritage - Shaping the Future," this year's festival features participation from 50 countries, international organizations, and businesses. The scale has been expanded with 45 cultural spaces, 35 food stalls, film screenings from 18 countries, a fashion space showcasing traditional costumes from 19 countries, and 20 international art troupes.
According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong, Hanoi has a history spanning thousands of years with many layers of cultural sediment. Organizing the festival at Thang Long Imperial Citadel contributes to creating a space for different cultures to meet, dialogue, and enhance mutual understanding.
Notably, the "Spreading Creativity from Heritage - International Games Festival" area offers a different approach to heritage. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with Vietnamese businesses, introduces, releases, and operates video games inspired by Vietnamese history and culture. The public can directly experience and explore heritage through modern interactive formats.
Cosplay, dance moves from the game Audition, and LED screen effects create a youthful and vibrant atmosphere. Placed alongside traditional cultural values, these activities suggest the possibility of incorporating heritage into new forms of expression, where technology and the creative industries become a bridge to the public, especially young people.
The opening ceremony featured performances by art troupes from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia , South Korea, Laos, Pakistan, Peru, and Ukraine. Representing Vietnam were People's Artist Trong Phuc, Truc Nhan, Hoa Minzy, Duc Phuc, Hoang Bach, Ha Myo, GOM Show, the Hue Royal Court Traditional Arts Theatre, the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Theatre, and many other art organizations and clubs.
From traditional art to contemporary music, from ethnic costumes to cinema, cuisine, and video games, festivals create numerous points of contact between cultures. The simultaneous presence of these diverse values also allows cultures to be seen, heard, and shared in a common space.
The festival aims to promote Hanoi's image as a UNESCO Creative City, while also showcasing Vietnam's heritage values and creative capabilities to the international community. According to Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong, this is also an opportunity for Hanoi to leverage its strengths in history, culture, and creativity, becoming a meeting point for diverse cultures.
The choice of Thang Long Imperial Citadel as the festival space thus creates a connection between the past and the present. A heritage site with thousands of years of history becomes a place to welcome the colorful cultures of the world, while simultaneously opening up new approaches to Vietnamese cultural values.
The festival also serves as a kick-off event for Vietnam's proposed initiative on the "International Decade for Culture for Sustainable Development" (2027-2036), which was recently adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Through this, the event contributes to spreading the message about the role of culture in promoting dialogue, connectivity, and sustainable development.
