According to The Guardian, in a social media post on October 2nd, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the situation in the city was deteriorating, stating that residents could no longer live as they did in peacetime while the city was constantly subjected to large-scale Russian attacks.

"The capital is in a very dire situation. It is no longer possible to say that we can live as if in peacetime. The enemy is tearing Kyiv apart," Klitschko wrote.

The warning was issued after recent attacks by Russian jet-powered drones, disrupting traffic in Kyiv, a city of over 3 million people located on both banks of the Dnipro River.

According to Pravda Ukraine , the South Bridge, one of eight bridges connecting the east and west banks of the Dnipro River in Kyiv, was closed after being attacked several times on October 1st and the morning of October 2nd. Meanwhile, the Paton Bridge to the north is only open to one-way traffic, although there is no confirmed information that this bridge was attacked.

This situation caused long lines of cars and buses on major roads. People had to find alternative routes, even walking, to get to work. “It took me three hours to get to work,” recounted Tetiana Osypenko, a 49-year-old seamstress, after her bus got stuck in the traffic jam. “There was no way to get there. It was impossible to cross the bridge today.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of escalating large-scale attacks against the country on the same day. "They want Ukrainians to leave the capital," Zelensky told reporters.

According to the New York Times, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal recently informed his European partners about a Russian plan to use up to 1,000 missiles and UAVs to attack the country's energy system. Targets include power substations, hydroelectric plants, and thermal power plants.

"Russia plans to isolate Kyiv, pushing the city back to the Stone Age," a senior Western diplomat in Kyiv told the Guardian.

The Kremlin has not commented on Ukraine's statements. Earlier, on October 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that attacks on Ukrainian economic infrastructure were in retaliation for Kyiv's attacks on Russian oil refineries.

After more than four and a half years of conflict, Ukraine is facing significant difficulties in its efforts to respond to Russian attacks. President Zelensky acknowledged that Russian jet-powered UAVs are faster and more difficult to intercept than conventional UAVs.

Zelensky also continued to urge Western allies to increase military support, particularly by providing more interceptor missiles for the US-made Patriot air defense system.

In related developments concerning the conflict, the Ukrainian army announced on October 2nd that it had attacked an oil refinery in Volgograd and another facility in Samara, both located in southwestern Russia.
