World gold prices reversed course and fell, selling pressure pushing prices down to $4,140 per ounce.
Gold prices failed to hold onto early gains and reversed course on Friday as US bond yields remained high and the dollar continued its upward trend for the week.
Spot gold prices briefly rose more than 1% on weaker-than-expected US jobs data, but then lost all those gains. By 2:33 p.m. EDT, prices were down 0.9% at $4,140.06 per ounce.
Since the beginning of the week, the precious metal has fallen by approximately 3.4%. US gold futures also closed 1% lower, at $4,162.30 per ounce.
The market was significantly impacted by bond yield movements. On Thursday, both the 10-year and 30-year yields in the US surged to their highest levels since 2002.
At the same time, the US dollar, despite weakening at times during the day, is still on track for a weekly gain, making gold more expensive for holders of other currencies.
The jobs report released today showed that the US economy added only 29,000 non-farm jobs in September. This increase was significantly lower than the forecast of 90,000 jobs.
The August figures were also revised down to 133,000 jobs, lower than the initially reported 162,000.
Weaker-than-expected figures helped gold surge as investors felt the Fed had less reason to continue raising interest rates aggressively.
However, Han Tan of Bybit notes that the Fed remains cautious about inflation. Therefore, investors should not rush to bet that weak labor data will immediately pave the way for more dovish monetary policy.
Interest rate policy developments are becoming a key factor for gold prices. The precious metal is often negatively impacted when interest rates and bond yields rise because gold does not provide a fixed return.
The market is now assessing the likelihood of the Fed raising interest rates in October at around 22%, a significant decrease from nearly 70% earlier this week, according to CME FedWatch.
This shift comes after lower-than-expected inflation data and some Fed officials expressing caution about further interest rate hikes.
However, expert Edward Meir at Marex warns that the technical picture for gold prices remains unfavorable. If yields and interest rate expectations both rise again, the precious metal could face further pressure.
Not only gold, but other precious metals also fell in price. Silver lost 0.8% to $60.36 per ounce; platinum dropped 2% to $1,692.90 per ounce; and palladium declined 0.5% to $1,165.75 per ounce. All three are likely to end the week in the red.
