According to the Hanoi Astronomical Society (HAS), tonight, October 4th, is the ideal time to point telescopes at the sky and search for Saturn, as the planet reaches opposition.

Specifically, at 7:21 PM on October 4th, Vietnam time, Saturn will reach opposition, a time when the Earth is almost directly on the line connecting the Sun and Saturn, causing Saturn to be opposite the Sun in the sky.

What's special about opposition? When an outer planet reaches opposition, it rises in the east around sunset and can be observed throughout the night, before setting in the west at dawn. For Saturn, this is also the time when the planet is closest to Earth and brightest this year.

Saturn will reach an apparent magnitude of approximately +0.3, bright enough to be easily seen with the naked eye when it is above the horizon. At its closest point in the year, during opposition, Saturn will be about 1.26 billion kilometers from Earth, equivalent to about 8.43 AU or about 70 light-minutes. This means that the light you see from Saturn takes about 70 minutes to travel from the planet to Earth.

Observation guide

Not only is Saturn brighter, but it also reaches its largest apparent size around opposition. The planet's disk has a diameter of about 19.7 arcseconds, making the details of its ring system easier to observe through telescopes.

With a small telescope, you can already see one of Saturn's most spectacular features: its enormous ring system. Interestingly, Saturn's rings are gradually "reopening" after temporarily disappearing.

In March 2025, Earth passed through Saturn's ring plane. At that time, the rings were almost oriented toward us and became extremely difficult to observe with small telescopes. Now, the rings are gradually opening up again.

Today, Saturn will rise in the east at sunset, reach its highest point in the sky at midnight, and set in the west at dawn.

Currently, as of October 2026, it is tilted approximately 7.5° south relative to Earth's viewing angle. This tilt is still quite small, but it will continue to change over time. So, when should we observe Saturn?

You don't necessarily have to wait until the night of October 4th. Saturn is entering a favorable observational phase and will continue to be in an extremely favorable position for observation in the months following opposition. In particular, the period from the beginning to the middle of October is a very worthwhile time to take your telescope outside.

"Find a place with a dark, dimly lit sky, facing east after dark, and look for a bright, pale yellow dot that stands out among the stars. A single point visible to the naked eye. A vast world more than a billion kilometers away. Through a telescope, you can see its famous rings," HAS instructed.
